The New Parque las Palapas

We went for a long walk sometime last week (I lose track of the days on vacation) crossing through the "new" Parque las Palapas. It had been a bit of an eyesore for a while, probably since Wilma. There used to be a big palapa, thus the name of the park, but it was pretty much shredded in the hurricane. There were always food vendors selling out of carts or tents or old wooden shelters. The ground was dirt or broken up concrete.

Here's a look at the "new" Park:

The Stage (note the lack of a palapa)

New palms, benches and cement

Cement tables and chairs (again, no palapas)

Nice, clean children's play area

The new "restaurant row"
and Police station

Police officers were working these kids hard

And they loved it

I've heard different opinions about the transformation, some say it's lost its charm, others say they better rename the park since there are no palapas. Overall I think it is a big improvement over what we have had the last few years, safe and clean and being put to use. There are so few community areas here that it was lovely to see so much activity in downtown Cancun, particularly the police interacting positively with the kids. Yes, the palapas will be missed and the charm of buying meat from a greasy folding table, but it will be greasy and dirty soon enough I am sure.

Wow I can't believe how much it's changed! The last time I saw it was when I met Janie & Norb for din din and it was pretty torn up then.

Perhaps this is a change for the good. Nicer to see cops working with kids than people selling drugs. Thats for sure.

Liz, watching the cops with the kids actually warmed my cold heart, it was lovely to see. They were HARDCORE on those kids "Callate! No te ries! Mas fuerte!"

Heather, I am the super scout of play areas I don't have to pay for, lol!
