Arrests in Morelia Bombing

Three men have been arrested for the Independence Day bombing in Morelia, Michoacan. As suspected, they are members of the gulf coast cartel "The Zetas". The men have confessed and report that their actions were meant to provoke the government, not as a direct threat against anyone in particular. The men claim they did not mean to hurt anyone, that their instructions were to launch the grenades in an area with no people but that they panicked and threw the weapons into a crowded area.

The actions of these three men and the people they work for took the lives of eight people, injured a hundred more and has put fear into the hearts of people across Mexico.

The English news story can be found here.

I doubt that the police have the wrong guys. Despite all the bad things people say about the Mexican police, they pretty much know what they are doing. I suspect their statements that they didn't mean to hurt anybody are geared more towards getting a lighter sentence than anything else. Does Mexico even have the death penalty??

Ale- I'm pretty sure they got the guys, now let's see what they do to them.

Heather- Yer welcome!

Islagringo- Here's what article 22 of the constitution of Mexico states "Article 22-The death penalty remains prohibited for political crimes, and for other crimes, it may only be imposed for treason to the Nation in a foreign war, for parricide, for homicide with treachery, premeditation or unfair advantage; for arson, abduction, highway robbery, piracy, or serious criminal offences against military order." Soooo, no death penalty except for acts of treason against the country. I think a lot of people would like to see the Morelia bombers tried and punished with the death penalty, we shall see what happens to them.
