Weekend in Akumal

Our weekend didn't go exactly as planned, due to circumstances beyond our control our original plan of escape was scrapped and we ended up in Akumal. Yeah, I know, poor us, how tragic that we had to get a hotel on the beach and spend our time frolicking in the sun. It was just a quick getaway, we arrived in Akumal at almost 5 o'clock on Saturday and left around 3 on Sunday, but it was a nice little refresher.

For those of you who don't know, Akumal is a sleepy little village that lies south of Playa del Carmen and north of Tulum. It's a GREAT spot for snorkeling or kayaking, Half Moon Bay is chock full of coral and sea life. There aren't many hotels, but there are many condos and privately owned villas available for rent. We stayed at the Vista del Mar Hotel, I thought it was pretty expensive for what we got, but for one night it was alright. We had a standard room and it was about 900 pesos for the night (QRoo discount included). Tiny room but clean and right on the beach, we slept with the sound of the crashing waves. There is a restaurant/bar right next door called "La Buena Vida" which has a lovely location right on the beach and decent food (at tourist prices). I think if we had managed to stay up later than 8:30 on Saturday night, we might have seen some good fun at the bar but alas we were tired little travelers and we were zonked out super early.

I think the best part of the weekend was sitting on the balcony with Max watching the stars and listening to the waves. The sky was so incredibly clear, stars were bursting out all over, I felt like I might actually have been able to touch one. Max and I talked about nature and the world and how amazing it all is. I had him close his eyes and listen to the surf and be very, very quiet, letting the sounds wash over us. I asked Max what he could hear and he very softly said "I can hear the fishies whispering, shhhhhhh, good night fishies". Now THAT made my weekend.

Our beautiful stretch of beach in Akumal

We really enjoyed the beach massages
(would this be considered child slavery?)

And there you have it, a quick little escape from the big city. I think Akumal is a great destination, not a whole lot to do except relax and embrace all that nature has to offer and enjoy the company of loved ones. My kind of weekend.

That's what I call a perfect Thanksgiving Canadians don't celebrate that particular date, do you? Could have fooled me. The photos were great. I especially liked the young masseuse and the whispering fishes story.

It looks like you all had a lovely weekend. It seems that perhaps your Max and my Birdie should open up their own massage business. She is pretty good!!
