Bovino's Restaurant Cancun

One of the treats my parents gave us during their visit was a "date night", just grown ups, just Hubby and I. How odd, I forgot that we could go to restaurants that don't have play areas and crayons on the table! I had just read in one of the local "society" magazines about a new restaurant opening up downtown and thought we would give it a try.

Bovino's is a Brazilian-style restaurant located just across the street from Costco. I had no idea what to expect, though I knew we were going to be eating meat. (Bovino's, bovine, cow, yeah, you got it). We walked into the restaurant and were immediately greeted with a friendly smile and seated in the dining room. The place was lovely, warm woods, kind of an upscale cabin feel to it. In the center of the room was a large buffet, I thought it was just a salad bar at first but on closer inspection I saw the salmon, shrimp, prosciutto (one of my absolutely favourite flavours), a variety of cheeses, veggies, soups, salads, enough to feed us for a week. The waiter explained to us that there was no menu, you simply help yourself to the buffet and when you were ready for the "cortes" (cuts of meat), you turn a little card on the table to "green" and the servers start to bring out the carne.

Vegetarians may want to stop reading here.... The servers not only brought meat, but it came skewered on swords. We started with filet mignon, moved on to a pork lomo encrusted with parmesan, smoked turkey, chicken, rib eye, sirloin, baby beef, the meat just kept coming! I am a real carnivore and I was in heaven. The meat was cooked "medium", normally I like it bloody rare, but the cuts were so tender and juicy and flavourful that I had nothing to complain about. When you wanted the meat train to stop coming, you flip the little card over to "red" and the waiters hold back. I didn't flip to red for quite some time, I honestly cannot believe how much I ate! I was getting really full when the waiter brought out the last cut. I wish I could remember what he called it, but it was the specialty of the house. I started to say "No", and he convinced me to just try a small slice. I wish I had started with that one, it was superb, melt in your mouth tender, hot and juicy, fantastic flavour.

I must have used the words "divine, delicious and heavenly" a hundred times that night, I was very impressed with the quality of the food. The service was top notch as well, the waiters were attentive without being overbearing and they went out of their way to ensure that we had all that we needed. They had an extensive wine list, Hubby had an Argentinian red wine and I had a Mexican sparkling that was actually quite good (normally I am quite snobby about Mexican wines). With the cozy atmosphere, good service and excellent food, I highly recommend that you check out Bovino's. As there is no menu, we really had no idea what we were going to pay for our feast, but it ended up being 318 pesos per person (plus drinks of course). I thought that was very reasonable for what we got, I've paid more and gotten less at other Cancun restaurants.

I wish this new restaurant lots of luck, I know it's difficult for new places to survive and I hope they do well. Spread the word, if you like meat like I do, you've got to give them a try!

(I didn't take any photos as it was "date night", pulling out the camera just didn't seem like the right thing to do, sorry!)

Every year for my husband's and my birthday (we're 1 day apart) we go to Texas de Brazil, a churrascaria here in town - it's just like Bovinos! They seem to be really popular in Texas and the states in general, we even went to a different one on our honeymoon in Washington DC!

I am so glad to know there's one in Cancun since I seem to be attracted to them, but I need to eat some delicious local food before I allow myself to go there.

As a born and raised Albertan, I can assure you I know good meat! I've been so happy with many of my experiences in Cancun, and some I won't lie.. not so happy (that's anywhere!!) I love the seasonings used here - we'll have to check this place out! I think Chicagotom had some pics on this place too! Maybe not! LOL!

I'm not the meat eater, but the buffet bar sounds good. I'll need to give it a try, if its still open in Oct. Thanks for the great beach pics. I'm in heaven!

I really like Mexican waiters. They are always there when you need them without being in the way when you don't need them. I also love the way they do not bring the bill until you ask for "La cuenta".

It was a huge shock when we drove into the States after leaving Mexico. One of the first waitresses actually dropped the bill on the table with the food.

We went to a restaurant exactly like this in Durango. They even used swords! Our meat medley also included things like esophagus. Good though.

Kelly- How cool that you almost share a birthday (and a love for meat, haha). Next time you are here, hit the local spots for some good Mexican then indulge yourself in the churrascaria, no reason you can't have it all!

On Mexican Time- There are some very fine places for meat here and as you say, some not so fine. Hubby and I both lament the closing of the old Porterhouse restaurant, we LOVED it there and had a very special meal that we will always remember. I just read Chicagotom's review, he was smart and took photos, lol!

KfromMichigan- Glad you enjoyed the pics! The buffet was great, I could have filled up on cheese and sushi even without all the meat!

Sue- I very rarely rave about restaurants or food, but I am still drooling over this place. Definitely have your friends check it out!

Croft- It's true, there is a big difference in service from Mexico to NOB. NOB they are either your bestest new friend and won't leave you alone or they are surly, lol!

IslaGringo- Esophagus? Ooook, I might try that, lol. I love the phrase "meat medley" by the way, I may have to steal it. :)

Laura- Let me know if you are able to get down, would love to finally meet you! Or "meat" you, haha! Here's hoping they survive so you can enjoy!

Kelly, Suz and I have eaten at Bovino's twice. Two successive Saturdays. It was their 2nd and 3rd weeks being open. We really enjoyed it. I wrote a review on it, so see my blog for it. We're happy you enjoyed it on your "date" night. We did too.

I am currently wondering what life would be like if I did what my Mexican man wants and moved from London to Cancun with him. I found your blog through looking for opportunities for English teaching. It's a real help. Thank you
